What is Multi-factor Authentication?
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a security feature that adds an extra layer of protection to your HSeLanD account. It works by asking you to verify your identity using two authentication methods when you try to sign in. On HSeLanD, you can choose at least one option out of three. The three options are:
- Pass key
- Time-Based One-Time Password via Authenticator App
- Email One-Time Password
We provide more information on each of these methods, along with instructions on how to set them up, below.
How does it work?
Multi-Factor Authentication works by combining different types of authentication factors to verify your identity. It uses:
- Something you know - this is the email and password for your account.
- Something you have - this could be your phone.
- Something you are - this could be your fingerprint or Facial recognition.
How to set up Multi-factor Authentication (MFA)
There are three authentication methods available for setting up MFA on your profile, and you must ensure that you choose at least one of them. If you have your own device for accessing hseland.ie, the recommended option is Pass key as this will simplify future logins.
Pass key
This method follows the something you are authentication factor, in this case, it can be your physical device, fingerprint, facial recognition, etc. If you are using a device, it will need a camera to scan a QR code.
When setting up your MFA method through pass key, first, you must verify that you own this account.
To do this, please follow the steps below:
- Select Validate email.
- Go to the inbox of the email address you are registered with. If you do not receive the email, please check your Junk/Spam folder.
- Enter the 6-digit code and select Validate code.
- Enter your current HSeLanD password.
- Create a device name. Adding an effective/identifiable device name will make your future sign-ins to HSeLanD much easier. When you next go to sign in, you will know exactly what device you must check to authenticate your sign in.
- Select Continue.
Now you must set up the pass key on the device itself. There are multiple devices that you can choose from, but it must be a separate device from the one you are logging in from.
Setting up MFA using pass key will depend on the device that you have. Below is an example of setting this up using an iPhone:
- Select Create Pass Key.
Select the Pass Key option you would like to use; in this case, it is iPhone, iPad or Android Device.
- Open the device you would like to use for the Pass key and open the camera. Please note you can only do this on devices that can scan QR codes natively within the camera application.
- Hover over the QR code.
- Follow the steps outlined on your device.
- Select Ok to confirm the creation of the pass key.
Now you can sign in to HSeLanD.
Authenticator App
This method follows the something you have authentication factor, in this case, access to a verified device. This is useful when using a shared machine.
When setting up your MFA method through the authenticator app, first, you must verify that you own this account.
Now you must access your authenticator app on the chosen device. There are multiple apps that you can choose from. At HSeLanD support, we recommend you use the Microsoft Authenticator app.
Setting up MFA using an authenticator app can vary depending on the device that you have, as well as the authenticator app that you are using. Below is an example of setting this up using the Microsoft Authenticator app on an iPhone.
Open Microsoft Authenticator on the desired device.
- Select the + or blue icon to scan the QR code.
Select Scan QR code. Hover the camera over the QR code on your screen.
- Enter the 6-digit code provided by the authenticator app into HSeLanD.
Email One-Time Password
This method follows the something you have authentication factor, in this case, access to your email profile.
Please note: If you’re registered with your work email address, this might not be the best option. If you plan to access HSeLanD from home and don’t have access to your work email, you won’t be able to complete the sign-in process. In that case, we recommend choosing one of the other two MFA options instead.
To do this, please follow the steps below:
- Select Validate email.
- Go to the inbox of the email address you are registered with. If you do not receive the email, please check your Junk/Spam folder.
- Enter the 6-digit code and select Validate code.
- Enter your current HSeLanD password
